But once they entered, they realized they had gained so much more than the potential for an award.

They had their best project materials gathered in one place. They gained clarity on how to tell the story behind the build. And they had powerful content they could repurpose for marketing, sales, and team recognition.

Whether you’re submitting for the first time or the fifth, here’s how to turn your entry into something much bigger than an award application:

1. Build Your Portfolio

Your HNA Awards submission is a carefully curated showcase of your work. You’ve gathered high-quality images, written out the project story, and captured what made it special. Why not use that same content for:

· A new case study on your website

· A feature in your next client proposal

· An updated portfolio or pitch deck

You already did the hard work. Now it’s time to let that story sell for you.

2. Fuel Your Social Media Strategy

Posting a project you submitted to the HNA Awards is a great way to show followers, clients, and potential hires what you’re capable of.

Try these content ideas:

· Project spotlight: Share a before-and-after carousel post

· Behind-the-scenes: Give a peek into the challenges and craftsmanship that made it special

· Team shoutout: Celebrate your crew and their work

· Client testimonial: Use the testimonial you used in your submission to show your impact

· “Why we submitted”: Talk about what made this project submission-worthy

Feel free to tag the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) or Hardscape North America to show your project off to our network of hardscape pros!

3. Improve Your Messaging

Writing a compelling description for your entry forces you to zoom out and think about your project strategically: What were the client’s goals? What problems did we solve? What made this build different?

That kind of reflection helps you talk about your work with more clarity and confidence in sales conversations. You’ll be more prepared to answer, “Why should we go with you?”—because you’ve already written it out.

4. Recognize and Motivate Your Team

Submitting to the HNA Awards sends a clear message: What we build matters. Even if you don’t win, your team deserves major recognition for getting a project across the finish line and into the national spotlight:

· Host a team lunch or small celebration

· Share behind-the-scenes stories on social media or in internal communications and give credit where it’s due

Recognition builds morale and morale builds momentum.

5. Use It to Recruit and Retain Talent

In a competitive labor market, showing that your company invests in quality, innovation, and industry recognition can be a major differentiator.

· Include HNA nomination news in your job listings or recruitment materials

· Talk about it in interviews to give candidates a sense of your culture and values

· Show new hires that excellence is part of your DNA

It sends a clear message: you take pride in what you build and who builds it with you.

6. Gain Valuable Feedback and Start Planning for Next Year

A strong submission—even if it didn’t win—lays the groundwork for future entries. Review judges’ feedback if available, evaluate how your project stacked up, and keep an eye out for standout jobs that could be next year’s winner.

Many companies build on past submissions to return stronger the next year—and walk away with the trophy.

Every time you enter the HNA Awards, you’re investing in your business. You’re building your brand. You’re improving how you present your work. You’re connecting to a national network of professionals who are raising the bar in hardscaping.

Remember that the recognition, visibility, and value of your work doesn't start—or stop—with an HNA Award.

It starts with the pride you take in your craft. And that’s always worth sharing!

Submit your project today!

Beyond Bragging Rights: 5 Unexpected Benefits of Entering the 2025 HNA Awards

When you think about entering the HNA Awards, it’s easy to focus on the

But while bragging rights are great (and well deserved for our winners!), many past participants say the real value of submitting goes far deeper.

Here are five benefits of entering the 2025 HNA Awards that make it worth your time even before the winners are announced:

1. You Build Your Brand—Just by Entering

Even if you don’t walk away with the top prize, submitting your project signals to clients, peers, and industry leaders that you take pride in your work and hold it to the highest standards. Participating in a respected industry competition builds industry awareness, sets your company apart and shows that you’re serious about craftsmanship and professionalism.

Pro Tip: Don’t underestimate name recognition. The more consistently your name appears in these circles, the more likely people will remember it when opportunity knocks.

2. You Create a Portfolio Piece That Works Hard for You

The HNA Awards submission process encourages you to gather great photos, reflect on the project’s design and installation details, and tell a compelling story. That means you walk away with an impressive case study or marketing asset you can use well beyond the awards.

Pro Tip: Your completed entry can easily be adapted for your website, social media channels, client presentations, or even press pitches.

3. You Gain Clarity on What Sets You Apart

Taking time to prepare a thoughtful submission often reveals more than just the steps of a project—it helps clarify your team’s strengths, unique approach, and problem-solving capabilities. That’s valuable intel for growing your business and refining your messaging!

Pro Tip: Use this awards submission process to get a clearer sense of the kinds of work you want to pursue more of in the future.

4. You Inspire (and Get Inspired by) Your Peers

Hardscaping is an ever-evolving industry filled with innovation and unique ideas underscored by technical expertise and best practices. By showcasing your work, you contribute to the larger conversation in the industry. And when the winners are announced, you’ll get to see what’s pushing the field forward in terms of design, materials, and innovation.

Pro Tip: This is a chance to be part of something bigger than yourself.

5. You Strengthen Your Team’s Morale and Pride

Few things feel better than seeing your team’s work recognized on a national stage. But just submitting a project can energize your crew, validate their effort, and give everyone a renewed sense of purpose and pride in what they do every day.

Pro Tip: Involve your team in the submission process. Having them select photos or write about their role in the project can help you tell the most complete story for the judges. Plus, it’s a great way to celebrate your shared success!

The 2025 HNA Awards are open for submissions through August 13.

Submit your project (or projects!) today.

“Should We Enter this Year?”: Your First Entry Could Be a Winner

If you think the HNA Awards are only for big-name firms with massive crews

Some of the most celebrated projects we’ve seen over the years have come from small teams, solo contractors, and first-time entrants.

Winning isn’t about how many awards you’ve won before. It’s about the quality of your work, your attention to detail, and how well you tell the story behind your specific project.

Here’s how to put your best foot forward even if this is your very first time entering.

1. Choose the Right Category

Before uploading anything, carefully read through the category descriptions. Placing your project in the most appropriate category ensures it's judged fairly and on the right criteria.

2. Tell a Story

The most compelling entries go beyond the surface. Talk about the client’s goals, the challenges you overcame, the decisions you made, and what the final outcome achieved. Judges want to understand not just what you did, but why it mattered.

3. Diversify Your Images

If you can, show the full arc of your work—before, during, and after construction. It helps judges see the transformation and appreciate your craftsmanship in context.

4. Include a Client Testimonial

There’s nothing more powerful than hearing how your work made an impact. A quote or two from your client adds authenticity and credibility to your entry.

5. Use the Platform to Your Advantage

We’ve made the submission process easy thanks to our user-friendly OpenWater platform. You can start an entry, save your progress, and return later when you’re ready. No need to complete everything in one sitting.

Note: Each project you submit is its own entry (with its own entry fee) and there are no limits to the number of submissions. If you’ve completed more than one standout project this year, give each one the spotlight it deserves!

Whether you’re just starting out or have been in the field for years, the HNA Awards are designed to celebrate excellence across the board.

Don’t underestimate your project and don’t count yourself out. Your work could be exactly what inspires someone else to push the industry forward!

Submit your first entry today.

The Most Common Mistakes on HNA Award Entries (and How to Avoid Them)

Incredible hardscaping projects miss out on top scores every year at the

Repeating the same image just to meet the five-photo minimum misses the opportunity to show the project's scope and complexity.

How to avoid it: Use each photo to support your project’s story. If possible, include a mix of before, during, and after images. Detail shots, wide views, and process pictures can all help the judges better understand your craftsmanship and design choices.

Mistake #2: Not Giving Enough Detail in Your Description

Why it hurts you: A short, vague description or a list that reads like a spec sheet leaves judges guessing. Even the most beautiful project won’t win if the story behind it isn’t clear.

How to avoid it: Treat the description like a guided tour for the judges. Explain the project’s goals, the challenges you faced, the materials and techniques used, and how you delivered results. The more vividly you describe the process, the more compelling your entry becomes.

Mistake #3: Submitting to the Wrong Category

Why it hurts you: Submitting a great project in the wrong category can lead to disqualification or an unfair comparison to different types of work.

How to avoid it: Read each category description carefully. When in doubt, reach out and ask! Picking the right fit ensures your work is evaluated fairly and gives it the best chance to succeed.

Mistake #4: Not Realizing Each Project Is Its Own Entry

Why it hurts you: It’s easy to think one entry can cover multiple projects, but each submission must focus on a single job site. Skipping this step can lead to incomplete entries or confusion.

How to avoid it: Submit each project as a separate entry, with its own full description, set of images, and entry fee. We encourage multiple submissions, but each one should be complete and thoughtfully presented.

Mistake #5: Leaving Submissions Incomplete

Why it hurts you: Getting started is great, but if you don’t hit “Submit” before the deadline, your entry won’t be judged at all!

How to avoid it: Use our OpenWater platform to your advantage. It allows you to start now, save your progress, and come back to polish your entry. But be sure to finish and submit it before the deadline. Set a reminder if you need to!

The HNA Awards are your opportunity to showcase your hard work, gain national recognition, and inspire the industry. Avoiding these common mistakes helps ensure that your submission reflects the high quality of your work and gives it the best chance to win.

Ready to submit? Start (or finish!) your entry today.

What Our HNA Awards Judges Really Look For

Each year, the Hardscape North America (HNA) Awards celebrate the best in

We asked a few of our esteemed 2025 HNA Awards judges to share what they’ll be looking for this year and why you should consider submitting your work.

Bold Vision Meets Technical Precision

When it comes to catching the judges’ eyes, boldness and innovation go a long way, as long as they're grounded in thoughtful design and industry standard installation.

“I’m hoping to see bold designs that balance innovation with functionality,” said judge Trevor Fearn. “Projects that reflect creative thinking, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of how hardscapes enhance outdoor spaces.”

“I want to see someone who took a big risk in design and knocked it out of the park without being afraid the project would be criticized,” judge Scott Prunty said.

Prunty emphasizes the importance of harmony between form and function.

“Multiple items have to happen, not just one,” he said. “A good use of colors, patterns, and textures that work well with the home or environment. An excellent flow of the space. Scale is appropriate for the area.”

Judges will be looking for projects that showcase superior craftsmanship.

“What I hope to see is unique designs constructed with a very high level of quality,” judge Dan Hughes said. “Projects using appropriate material selections and installed to meet or exceed CMHA best installation practices. Projects with perfect lines and outstanding cuts with consistent joint widths will score the highest, as well as those with photos during construction showing the process of following CMHA best practices.”

Share Your Story

What elevates a great project into an award-winning one? According to our judges, it’s the story behind the space.

“A great entry tells a story,” Fearn said. “It clearly outlines the project’s goals, challenges, and outcomes, supported by strong visuals and thoughtful design choices.”

HNA Awards judge Frank Bourque echoes that sentiment.

“I’m looking forward to seeing bold creativity, intentional designs, and a clear commitment to craftsmanship and client experience. The best submissions go beyond aesthetics—they tell the story behind the project, including the challenges, the vision, and the solutions that brought it to life,” Bourque said.

In other words, don’t just show what you built. Share how and why you built it.

Show Off Your Impact

Whether it’s an elegant backyard retreat or a multi-use commercial space, the most compelling entries solve real problems and serve real people.

“I want to see projects that clearly solve the clients’ wants and needs,” judge Bryan Horr said. “A welcoming gathering space, an entertaining outdoor area, or even a beautifully designed parking space that doubles as stormwater control — these kinds of solutions are what stand out.”

And don’t forget the details.

“Details can separate a good job from a great one,” Horr said.

“An entry stands out when the design has purpose, the execution is exceptional, and the submission shows the thought process behind the work,” Bourque said. “I also appreciate when companies are transparent about the obstacles they overcame—those insights make the success even more meaningful.”

Why Submit to the 2025 HNA Awards?

Beyond the chance to take home a national award, submitting to the HNA Awards is a chance to elevate your reputation and the industry overall.

“There’s excellent work not being recognized,” Prunty said. “Competition drives better results and moves the industry forward.”

“Submitting to the HNA Awards is a great way to gain visibility, build credibility, and inspire others in the industry,” Fearn said.

“By showcasing your projects, you’re inspiring others, attracting talent, and helping clients understand the value of quality work,” Bourque said.

“All true hardscapers take pride in their work,” Horr said. “This is an opportunity to show everyone that you're the best, get the recognition you deserve, and to encourage the next generation of hardscapers.”

If you’ve poured your skill, creativity, and heart into a hardscape project this year, don’t keep it to yourself!

Start your submission today.

Hardscape North America Expands Education Offerings with Real-World Learning Opportunities for 2025 Show

Hardscape North America (HNA) is raising the bar on industry education with

You’ll find options broken out by commercial and residential use, by square footage, and even by specialized systems like permeable pavement.

Not sure where to start? Here’s a closer look at four standout categories you should consider for your 2025 submission.

Vintage Installation

Has your project stood the test of time?

Some hardscapes don’t just look good the day they’re installed—they keep impressing years down the line. The Vintage Installation category honors those lasting legacies for both residential and commercial installations.

If your project was completed before 2016 and still draws attention for its craftsmanship, design, and durability, this is your moment. Let your work tell the story of what true staying power looks like.

Adhered Thin Veneers – Residential & Commercial

Big texture. Bold detail. Lasting impressions.

Whether you’ve worked with natural stone, clay brick, or manufactured veneers, this category celebrates vertical and near-vertical applications that add visual depth and architectural polish to hardscape design.

If you’ve created a veneer installation that turns walls into works of art—on homes, garden features, or standalone structures—this is your chance to get noticed in a growing category.

Segmental Concrete Pavement – Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavement (PICP)

Sustainable, smart, and sophisticated.

Projects using permeable pavers deserve recognition not just for their aesthetics, but also for the impact they have on stormwater management and site sustainability.

This subcategory of the Segmental Concrete Pavement category is for horizontal or near-horizontal installations using permeable interlocking concrete pavement systems. Note: projects with stormwater systems beneath traditionally impermeable surfaces aren’t eligible here, so double-check before submitting.

Combination of Hardscape Products – Residential and Commercial

For when you’ve brought it all together.

Maybe your project uses several product types, layered into a cohesive and creative whole. That’s what the Combination category is all about, celebrating the beauty that comes from thoughtful material pairings and smart design integration.

Not sure where your project fits? Combination is often a strong choice when multiple materials are involved. We offer three subcategories based on type and size of the project:

· Residential (3,000 sq. ft. or less)

· Residential (more than 3,000 sq. ft.)

· Commercial

Ready to Explore the Full List of Categories?

This is just the beginning. With nine different categories and additional subcategories available, there's sure to be one that is a perfect fit for your hardscaping projects in the 2025 HNA Awards.

Visit the full category list, review the descriptions, and start preparing your entries today!

Maximize Your Moment: Why Submitting Multiple Entries Pays Off

Want to increase your chances of winning an HNA Award?
